The Cabildo has extended its warm congratulations to the island’s sportswomen who will be recognised at the third Canary Islands Women and Sports Gala, to be held on 23rd April at Jameos del Agua.
The event, organised by the Canarian Government, will honour world surfing champion Sol Borelli and Berta Santana, president of CD Adassa, for her work in adapted hockey. A special award will also be presented to sisters Ingrid Roger and Brenda Roger, natives of Fuerteventura who have made history after several seasons with CB Zonzamas.
Oswaldo Betancort, president of the Lanzarote Cabildo, said that the awards “represent the values of the women of Lanzarote”.
“It is a source of immense pride for all the citizens of Lanzarote and La Graciosa that Berta Santana and Sol Borelli are being honoured for their recent achievements; they are an example that with hard work and sacrifice, no goal is unattainable. Likewise, the role of Ingrid and Brenda Roger at CB Zonzamas is fundamental to understanding the growth of women’s handball on our island,” he added.
Juan Monzón, the Regional Minister for Physical Activity and Sports, described Santana and Borelli as “two athletes who represent the present and the future of sports in the Canary Islands”.
“Their careers reflect the high calibre of our youth programme, and they are also united with the Roger sisters in their dedication to representing Zonzamas. Having role models of this calibre in Lanzarote compels us to continue strengthening our support for sports,” Monzón concluded.
