Domingo González Arroyo, the ex-Mayor of La Oliva in Fuerteventura who has been nicknamed “the Marquis of the Dunes” has been admitted to the Social Insertion Centre near Tahiche’s prison to serve an 18-month sentence for tax offences.
González Arroyo, who was born on Lanzarote but became the Mayor of Fuerteventura’s most northern municipality for 26 years, was sent to Tahiche after failing to pay fines amounting to more than €1.5 million that were ordered in 2021.
The 86-year-old veteran politician’s claims of bankruptcy, and his requests for a suspended sentence, were rejected by the court.
