A partial eclipse of the sun will be visible on Lanzarote on Wednesday evening, while the Perseids meteor shower will reach its peak later that night.
The eclipse will obscure around 73% – 74% of the sun and will take place between 7.28 pm and 7.33 pm on Wednesday evening, just before sunset.
This means that the best places to see it will be those facing clear western horizons, and the eclipse will be slightly greater the further north on the island you go.
Ideal places to view the eclipse include the Famara clifftops, Famara village and La Santa. The Elder Natural History Museum, based on Gran Canaria, will be holding a meeting on La Santa’s promenade to see the phenomenon, where they plan to hand out eclipse glasses.
The eclipse will also be visible from western facing viewpoints further south, such as Janubio, Playa Blanca and Papagayo.
If you wish to view the eclipse, you’re advised to wear eclipse glasses, which are dark enough to avoid eye damage.
Once darkness falls, it will be possible to view the shooting stars caused by the Perseids meteor shower, which continue through August but reach their peak in the early hours of Thursday morning.
Conditions for the eclipse and the Perseids promise to be good, with clear skies forecast and a new moon on the night of the 12th.
