Efigenia Torres Martín, one of the most respected craftswomen on the island, has died at the age of 75.
Doña Efigenia was known throughout the Canaries for her mastery of rosette-making. This craft, similar to lace-making or crocheting doilies, can still be seen in the Monumento de Campesino and island craft fairs. The resulting rosettes are used as place mats, tablecloths or for a variety of decorative purposes, and were often used instead of currency in days gone by.
In 2013 Doña Efigenia was invited to open the Fiestas of Carmen in Teguise, an honour that was repeated for the Fiestas of Las Nieves in 2017. On both occasions she gave wonderful speeches recalling her early childhood in Maguéz and her later life in La Villa de Teguise.
