The Canarian Government issued a pre-alert for large waves yesterday afternoon, with conditions predicted to be at their worst on Saturday 17th January.

The wave period is expected to exceed 12 seconds, causing waves of up to two to three metres in height. This is combined with winds that could reach up to 50 kph in exposed areas North, northwest and west coasts of the island will be the main areas affected.

Heavy swells from the north Atlantic have led to many similar alerts in recent weeks and have caused drownings in Lanzarote and on Tenerife. Put simply:  this weekend it’s a bad idea to get too close to the ocean on the northern coasts of the island.
