After months of treatment and recovery, local electrician Matt Howell has returned to work. In a heartfelt message, he reflects on the support he received from healthcare professionals, fellow tradespeople, friends, clients and family during a challenging period.
For many self-employed people in Lanzarote, work is more than a job. It is a livelihood, a commitment to clients and often a significant part of daily life. When illness or injury interrupts that routine, it can bring unexpected challenges.
That is something local electrician Matt Howell knows only too well.
After several months of eye treatment, hospital appointments and recovery, Matt has now returned to work and wanted to use the opportunity to thank those who helped him along the way.
“After several months of eye treatment, hospital appointments and being told more than once to sit still and behave myself, I’m pleased to say that I’m finally back at work,” he said.
“As many readers know, I work as an electrician here in Lanzarote. Being self-employed means that when you’re unable to work, life doesn’t simply stop. Jobs have to wait, customers need updates and, occasionally, you have to rely on the support of others.”
A significant part of that support came from the team at José Molina Orosa Hospital.
“Firstly, I would like to say a sincere thank you to the team at José Molina Orosa Hospital, especially Dr Zapata and the Eye Department, whose skill, care and professionalism have helped me regain my sight and return to work. The treatment and support I received throughout my recovery were exceptional.”
Matt also asked to recognise Dr Moreno, who carried out the laser treatment and oversaw much of his recovery.
His experience has also highlighted the importance of understanding the local healthcare system before it is needed.
“One thing this experience has taught me is that if you move to a new country, it’s worth taking the time to familiarise yourself with your local hospital and healthcare system before you actually need it.”
Matt also expressed his appreciation to clients who chose to wait while he recovered.
“I’d also like to thank my clients for their patience and understanding. Many were happy to wait for me to recover properly rather than rush back before I was ready, and that loyalty has meant a great deal to me and my family.”
He was equally keen to acknowledge the island’s trade community.
“A special thank you also goes to the other electricians on the island. Lanzarote may be small, but the trade community is surprisingly close-knit.”
“During my recovery, several electricians checked in regularly to see how I was getting on, sent messages of support and, in some cases, even contacted me for advice on jobs they were working on.”
Away from work, friends stepped in to help with transport and appointments, while his wife Nerina continued managing a busy schedule.
“While I was being told to rest, she continued running her catering business, managing holiday rentals, looking after clients, keeping everything moving forward and, of course, looking after me.”
Thankfully, Matt’s recovery has gone well.
“I’m now back behind the wheel, back on the tools and looking forward to helping both existing and new clients across the island.”
Perhaps most importantly, the experience has reinforced what many people value about life in Lanzarote.
“To everyone who sent good wishes, offered practical help, showed patience or simply asked how I was doing, thank you.”
“Experiences like this remind you that Lanzarote is more than just a beautiful island — it’s a community, and we are fortunate to be part of it.”
