Despite viruses, quarantine, Brexit and the economy, estate agents are reporting a surge in online searches for overseas properties as locked-down Britons rethink where they want to live – or are they just dreaming?

Searches for properties in Spain were up 34% year on year during May, while those for homes in France, including in areas such as the Dordogne and Brittany, were up 33%, according to the Rightmove website.

Some of those searching for properties are serious about either relocating overseas or buying a holiday home. Among them are some who are seizing the chance to make a move they’ve long considered before Brexit makes things more difficult. However, Rightmove acknowledged that others were merely “dreaming of a trip abroad”, perhaps following the disappointment of a cancelled summer break.
