Lanzarote Socialists have accused the Cabildo of favouring councils run by fellow party members of the Coalición Canaria (CC).

The allegation arose after the Cabildo announced improvement works to the health centres in Costa Teguise and Tinajo, both located in CC-run council areas. However, no plans were announced for similar works on the health centre at Playa Honda, in the Socialist-governed municipality of San Bartolomé.

Raúl de León, secretary of Lanzarote’s Socialists, accused the Cabildo of turning “healthcare into an electoral weapon and a tool for political and social confrontation.”

Lanzarote’s council elections will take place next May and the island is likely to see a flurry of public works as politicians attempt to fulfil their manifestos, spend their budgets and attempt to impress voters.
