Onions and lemons up, tomatoes down

Green onions, lemons and cabbages are the groceries that have seen the greatest price increase in the last 12 months, according to the Canarian Institute of Statistics.

Green onions, called cebolletas in Spanish, have shot up from an average price of 69 cents last year to €1.70 this year., an increase of 178%. Lemons have risen by 88% and cabbages by 40%. Melons and sweet potatoes are also significantly dearer than last year.

But it’s good news for those who like tomatoes and papayas, both of which have fallen in price by 40% and 25% respectively. Onions, watermelons and corn on the cob are also much cheaper this year.
