Yaiza stages first Crazy Cars Grand Prix with 11 homemade vehicles

Yaiza hosted its first Crazy Cars Grand Prix on Sunday, with 11 homemade, engine-less vehicles competing on a 500-metre street circuit.

The course, which ran between La Alameda and Los Remedios squares, featured two straights, two chicanes, a ramp and a challenging curve. The main straight proved to be the fastest section of the circuit, drawing plenty of attention from the crowd.

The podium was decided using each vehicle’s times from two timed laps of the circuit, together with an assessment of its design.

Omar Perdomo took first place. David Rodríguez and Iván Medina finished second, while Gustavo Torres took third place with “Laya”, whose design evoked a palm tree.

The winning vehicle stood out for its reliability and speed, while Omar Perdomo’s performance behind the wheel also impressed. However, the organisers said the audience enjoyed the spectacle provided by all 11 vehicles.

Yaiza mayor Óscar Noda and the councillor for Festivals, Daniel Medina, presided over the awards ceremony and thanked the Yaiza Festival Committee and all the participants for their enthusiasm and work in organising the event.

Daniel Medina opened the competition by driving the lead car without taking part in the race.

The celebrations continued in the square with a live performance from the band Defecto Venturi. Food stands decorated like race pits also provided refreshments as the Yaiza community continued the festivities.
