The annual pilgrimage in honour of the Virgin of Los Remedios saw residents and visitors donate farm produce, non-perishable food and basic necessities for vulnerable families.
Hundreds of people took part in the pilgrimage offering to the Virgin of Los Remedios in Yaiza last Saturday, combining the town’s traditional celebrations with a major gesture of solidarity.
Residents and visitors brought farm produce, non-perishable food and basic necessities, which will be distributed to vulnerable families. The event remains one of the most popular and participatory celebrations in southern Lanzarote.
Pilgrims of all ages travelled from the football field car park to the church, accompanied by parrandas and folk groups that played music and danced along the route. The procession concluded with the offering at the feet of the patron saint.
The pilgrimage also provided an opportunity to celebrate family traditions. Lucas Ortiz, a young resident of Yaiza, wore the same clothes his father had worn 45 years ago when he danced with the Yaiza rondalla.
Many other families from Yaiza and across Lanzarote joined the procession, sharing music, wine, cheese, cured meats, sweets and traditional Canarian dishes.
Around 20 floats took part, most of them animal-drawn. Workers from the primary sector brought donkeys and horses, while rancher Chalo Viñoly arrived with two camels from the Uga herd.
The Yaiza senior citizens’ group was also among those taking part. The group, which regularly participates in the municipality’s major festive and cultural events, had spent recent weeks rehearsing with members of the dance troupe from the Rubicón Folk Group.
They performed in front of the image of the patron saint, with the pilgrimage also providing an opportunity for different generations to come together.
Following the pilgrimage, celebrations continued at Plaza de Los Remedios with performances by musical groups.
