Lanzarote celebrated well into the early hours after the final whistle blew at 11.02 pm last night, confirming that Spain had won the FIFA World Cup for the second time in history.
Just as in 2010, the match was a hard-fought affair against a brutal opposition; just as in 2010 the only winning goal came well into extra time, and was scored by a Barcelona player, and just as in 2010, Shakira was there.
On Lanzarote, large crowds watched the match on big screens in Arrecife, Puerto del Carmen, Playa Blanca, Arrieta, Valterra and La Santa, and the celebrations combined with the end of the fiestas of Carmen in several places.
After the match there were fireworks, music and, of course, convoys of cars tooting their horns in celebration.
In 2010, the World Cup (or an authorised replica) toured Spain after the victory, allowing locals to have their photo taken with football’s most famous trophy. We’ll let you know if the same thing happens this year.
