A proposal by Arrecife to allow dogs to use two of the beaches in the municipality is currently open for objections from the public.

The two beaches in question are the Playa de El Cable, a sandy cove between Arrecife and playa Honda; and the Playa de La Cruz, a rocky, muddy beach directly opposite the Ayuntamiento building on the capital’s seafront.

The proposal would allow owners to exercise dogs on the beaches in daylight hours, although both beaches would be closed to dogs between the 1st of February until the 1st of July.

This would protect the nests of Kentish plovers, the little birds that can often be seen scuttling along Lanzarote’s shores, which nest on open sandy areas.

If successful, the proposal will double the amount of “dog beaches” on the island, of which there are currently two – one at Playa de Las Coloradas in Playa Blanca, and the other at Playa Guacimeta in San Bartolomé, between Playa Honda and Puerto del Carmen.
