Lanzarote’s Water Consortium has decided to continue with the process of winding up the existing contract with Canal Gestión, after the failure of Canal to arrange a successful transfer of the service to other companies.

After two three-month periods during which Canal was permitted to arrange the transfer of services to third parties, they have failed to reach an arrangement that satisfies the Consortium.

The president of the Lanzarote Water Consortium and the Cabildo, Oswaldo Betancort, said that “this wasn’t simply a matter of replacing one company with another, but rather of ensuring a qualitative leap in service provision based on the public interest and the conditions established by the Consortium Assembly.”

Cabildo Water Councillor, Domingo Cejas, said that the Consortium has acted “within the legal framework, exhausting all the avenues stipulated in the contract” and reiterated that Canal Gestión must continue providing the service until a final decision is reached.
