Easter celebrations have already started in Lanzarote’s churches, and a week of masses, vigils and processions lies ahead.
Each church will have a different schedule to mark Holy Week, and details should be available at each church.
One of the most important events is the Procession of the Encounter, which begins at 8pm in the Plaza de las Palmas Arrecife, as the image of Jesus Christ is removed from the church and paraded around the streets of the capital. Shortly afterwards, the image of the Virgin Mary is taken out on a different route. Both images are accompanied by solemn music played by municipal bands.
Finally, the two images meet face-to-face in the Plazuela, where a devoted silence is observed and a sermon delivered.
