65-year-old German man drowns at Órzola beach

A 65-year-old German died yesterday while swimming at the Playa de la Cantería near Órzola.

At 1.15 pm emergency services were alerted that a bather appeared to be in trouble around 20 metres out to sea. Once taken to shore, no pulse was detected and attempts at resuscitation were in vain.

The Playa de la Cantería is one of the most dangerous beaches on the north coast, with strong and unpredictable currents. After a Belgian tourist drowned there in 2012, Haría Ayuntamiento prohibited bathing and erected warning signs. In November 2023 a 47-year-old Polish visitor also lost his life on the beach.
