Lanzarote’s Water Council has commenced cleaning work in the Barranco del Huron. The project, which will last for around three months, has cost €87,800.
The Barranco del Hurón is the ravine which channels much of the water from the high inland areas of Teguise to the sea, running past Montaña Tinaguache and the football ground to Playa las Cucharas.
The aim is to clear the ravine of blockages so that floodwater can pass swiftly and rapidly to the sea, without flooding adjacent properties.
In April, flash floods caused the closure of three hotels and several businesses when the barranco burst its banks following an intense, localised rainstorm. The incident caused Lanzarote to declare a state of emergency and made international news.
