The EasyJet flight, EZY 2029, which was scheduled to depart from Terminal 1 for Lanzarote Airport, was preparing for pushback when a ground vehicle, known as a tug, made contact with the aircraft’s front wheels.
The incident triggered a standard emergency response, with several fire engines and service vehicles rushing to the scene as a precaution. While the sight from Terminal 1 was dramatic, it is understood to be routine procedure. No passengers were injured in the incident.
As a safety measure, all passengers were required to disembark and return to the terminal. EasyJet arranged for an alternative aircraft to operate the flight to ensure everyone’s safe passage to Lanzarote.
Despite the incident taking one gate out of action, a spokesperson for Manchester Airport confirmed it did not cause any wider disruption to other flights.
An easyJet spokesperson provided this statement:
“Flight EZY2029 from Manchester to Lanzarote this morning (Saturday, September 13th) has been delayed departing after the tug came into contact with the aircraft during pushback from the terminal. Emergency services attended the aircraft as a precautionary and routine measure only. Passengers disembarked and returned to the terminal where we are providing refreshments while we arrange for an alternative aircraft to operate the flight this afternoon. Safety is our highest priority, and we are sorry for any inconvenience caused by the delay.”
