The Caleton Blanco natural lagoon and the nearby Charco de la Condesa have been closed to the public by Haría Ayuntamiento after a fishing boat ran aground and caught fire just south of Órzola.
The Canarian Emergency Directorate has also issued an alert for marine pollution following the incident. Citizens are asked to respect the instructions on signage if they are in the area.
The boat ran aground at around 5 m on Wednesday morning, and locals contacted emergency services after hearing cries of distress. Five Moroccan men were later rescued from the vessel, which ten burst into flames at around 9 am.
Police are working on the assumption that the five occupants are migrants who used the boat to reach the Canaries. Two of the men were taken to hospital for treatment, two were transferred to the Temporary Foreigners Assistance Centre in Arrecife, and a minor was taken away in a Guardia Civil vehicle.
