Arrecife is the most indebted council on Lanzarote, with a 26.37 million outstanding debt that works out at over €400 per resident.
Figures from Spain’s Hacienda (tax agency) show that the outstanding debt of the capital is greater than that of the Cabildo, at €134 per person.
Tinajo (€75 per person), Yaiza (€22) and Teguise (€12) are also in the red, according to the figures. The three Socialist-run councils on the island, Tías, San Bartolomé and Haría, have no debt.
