A statue of Canarian wrestler Joaquin Rodríguez was unveiled in Uga yesterday.

Rodríguez (1895 -1959) was known as “El Pollo de Uga” (“Bantam of Uga”) and was one of the most popular Canarian wrestlers of all time, filling stadiums throughout the islands during his heyday in the 1920s.

Local journalist Manuel García Deniz gave a speech describing Rodríguez’s career and his importance to the sport. The event was also attended by Yaiza Mayor Óscar Noda, Rodríguez’s youngest daughter, María Mercedes and several members of the Canarian wrestling community.

The statue was created by Yaiza-based sculptor Cintia Machín, who was also responsible for the figure of Ironman founder Kenneth Gasque that was unveiled in Puerto del Carmen recently.
