Union Sur Yaiza are almost certainly facing the drop as the season winds up. It’s a sad end to what has been a spirited campaign in the team’s historical first taste of the national leagues.

Yaiza had already suffered two defeats on the trot before hosting Real Madrid “C”, and hopes of a great escape had already evaporated. But the Lanzarote side still showed spirit and resilience as they faced the Madrileños under the volcano.

Union Sur Yaiza’s recent home defeat against Real Madrid’s second reserve team significantly diminishes the team’s chances of securing survival in the three remaining matches of the regular season of the Second Federation. Two goals from the visitors in the first half left the green and white team with no chance, and they were unable to get back into the game in the closing stages.

Unión Sur Yaiza were able to deal with Real Madrid “C’s” initial push, as they pushed dangerously close to the area. Trovento tried to score after a pass from Marco Siverio, smashing the ball into a defender’s body, but later Carvajal made no mistake, putting the visitors ahead in the 15th minute.

The Madrileños scored their second goal midway through the first half, with captain Carlos heading in a corner kick. Needing an audacious gamble to fight back, Yaiza’s coach Emilio Ferreras team made a double substitution in the 31st minute, bringing on Pablo Margallo and Nuha.

It seemed to work at first – Unión Sur Yaiza stepped up to the challenge in the second half and almost reduced the deficit with a Pablo Bolado free kick, but the goal was denied as two home players caused an obstruction in the wall. A Nuha header that went wide and a Jordan cross that was cleared by the goalkeeper were the clearest chances.

Although relegation from the league is not yet a mathematical certainty, the defeat leaves Unión Sur Yaiza on the brink of relegation. With three matches remaining at the time of writing, they are nine points behind Colonia Moscardó, the team occupying the play-off position.

Consequently, even if the Greens win all three games their fate will still be in the hands of other sides.

The last match of the season on 4th May will offer fans the chance to turn out and show appreciation to Yaiza and their first season at the highest level they have ever competed.
