PROMENADE PROBLEMS

Dear Editor,

The seafront promenade (Avenida Playa Honda) has now become unsafe for pedestrians due to the number of cyclists and scooters using this area. There are signs at La Concha and the airport that tell cyclists not to cycle, but they take no notice.

The Guardia Civil are there some mornings but it makes no impact. Maybe it’s time to introduce signs on the Avenida saying, “No cycling or scooters” and on-the-spot fines. It’s only a matter of time until a serious accident happens.

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

Dear Sirs,

Credit where credit is due!

The gardening team that keeps Costa Teguise tidy are doing an amazing job! Over the past two weeks the street that I am staying on is looking fantastic. All of the shrubs, palm trees and other vegetation is so neat and tidy.

Keep up the good work, it does not go unnoticed.

Regards, Costa Teguise Fan

ELECTRIC JUNGLE

Dear Gazette Life,

We were all looking forward to having fibre internet installed in our street, Calle Miramar, Güime. But since installing, the number of overhead cables installed is so much that the street should now be called Calle Miraloscables. The annoying thing about this is the fact that tubes were installed under the pavement many years ago for telephone and electric cables but have never been used. The quality of the installations is very bad, the fibre cables are all hanging at different heights blocking out sea views that we once had.

The photo is of my house and as you can see, I have 14 cables dangling loosely restricting my previous beautiful view. Many years ago, there was talk of ridding Lanzarote of all overhead cables, this is why they installed under pavement tubes and access covers in Calle Miramar.

CITY SUNSET

Dear Gazette,

My husband took this picture of the Charco de San Ginés last night on the way back from the Christmas fair – such a stunning sunset in what is a beautiful area of Arrecife.

Love your magazine and loved the Xmas cover, too. Very festive in an understated way.

Regards Shelley

CALIMA WARNING

Dear Gazette,

As a service to your readers, perhaps you’d like to publish the days and times when I plan to wash my car?

It may not sound like useful information, but I can guarantee that once I’ve spent some time washing and polishing my car until it is gleaming, that is when a calima will arrive on the island, immediately covering it in red dust or splotchy raindrops.

Yours, G. Harding

BUS REQUIRED

Dear Editor,

It’s good to hear about the new Lidl and Aldi supermarkets opening in Playa Blanca. However, all we need now is for the buses to be re-routed. These supermarkets are of no use if you do not own a car.

Terry Culligan

Ed: I wouldn’t hold your breath, Terry. The out-of-town commercial zones in Argana and Playa Honda are planned for car drivers and have never been particularly well-served by public transport, either.

HAIL KENNETH!

Dear Editor,

I was delighted to read in your January 2025 edition that Kenneth Gasque is to have a statue erected in Puerto del Carmen.

My husband and I met Kenneth well over fifteen years ago at Club La Santa where he organised the Volcano Triathlon.

In 2010 I entered as a 53-year-old female. Although I finished quite a few minutes behind the other competitors Kenneth made me feel as important as everyone else and was so full of praise at my achievement.

He is a true gentleman, and the honour is well deserved.

Yours in sport Angela, Absolom Somerset, England
