The Cabildo has invited representatives of all the island’s councils to a summit meeting that aims to evaluate the taxi services offered on Lanzarote over the Christmas period, after the apparent failure of an agreement that was supposed to permit cabbies from all over the island to operate in different municipalities.

This spirit of collaboration that was seen at the meetings where the agreement was made did not translate to reality, said transport councillor Domingo Cejas, meaning that many residents and tourists were left without taxi services at key moments, especially in areas of high demand.

Taxi problems continue on the island, with a woman staging a sit-down protest in Arrecife on Tuesday after waiting for over 90 minutes for a taxi. In the capital, there are several complaints that taxi drivers rush to the cruise port for lucrative fares, leaving the rest of the city unattended.

Meanwhile, at the airport, complaints have been made that Terminal 2 was left without any taxi services, meaning that Canarian passengers had to take their luggage and join the queue at Terminal 1.
