FIFA has confirmed that Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will be one of the locations chosen to host international matches in the 2030 World Cup.
The 2030 tournament will take place in Spain, Portugal and Morocco, and Las Palmas will be the location for group games and, possibly, a quarter-final knockout match
The Estadio de Gran Canaria in the barrio of Siete Palmas is the home ground of U.D. Las Palmas, the most successful football team in the Canaries. The Cabildo of Gran Canaria has approved a €100 million project to renovate the stadium in preparation for the tournament, boosting capacity to 44,000 spectators.
It will be the first time that the Canaries has hosted football at this level, although the Gran Canaria stadium has previously been used for international friendlies and qualification matches.
It will be the first World Cup to take place in Spain since 1982, when Northern Ireland beat the hosts at Valencia before England and Spain were both eliminated in the second group round.
