Yaiza’s famous belén (nativity scene) was officially opened on Friday night, surprising all those present when the model of Timanfaya suddenly erupted.
The nativity, created by Pancho Ortiz, Aridane Cabrera and Orlando Caraballo, is a large replica of the island of Lanzarote featuring many of its emblematic landscapes and buildings, miniature models of islanders and, of course, shepherds and wise men travelling to pay homage to the holy family.
The volcano is programmed to erupt every three minutes, emitting smoke and sound effects, and ensures that Yaiza’s belén remains at the top of the list of sights to see on Lanzarote at Christmas.
