Óscar Noda, the Nueva Canarias councillor at the Cabildo, has called for the cleaning and restoration of the Famara salt works.
“We cannot forget”, said Noda, “that the salt flats were essential for the island economy until not long ago and, in addition, we shouldn’t let the effort of many islanders who worked from dawn till dusk to transform the environment they inhabited fall into oblivion.”
“Saltworks architecture is a clear example of a trade passed down from parents to children for generations, of grit and sweat on Lanzarote. Sustainable tourism can give new impetus to an area that is much more than Famara Beach”
The saltworks at the foot of the Famara cliff are among the oldest on the island, described by the British voyager George Glas in his 1764 book on the Canaries.
