The body found in Tenerife’s Masca valley yesterday has been confirmed to be that of 19-year-old, Jay Slater.
An autopsy identified the body through fingerprinting and stated that the cause of death was injuries that were probably caused by a fall. There is no suspicion of foul play.
The Masca valley is inaccessible area of steep terrain and thick undergrowth. After a Guardia Civíl search team located the corpse yesterday, it needed to be airlifted out by helicopter.
The tragic incident is a reminder of how inaccessible and treacherous some areas of the Canary Islands can be. At Christmas 2011, 61-year-old British tourist Margaret Holt disappeared during a hike in the north of Lanzarote. Extensive searches involving dogs, helicopters and volunteers failed to locate her.
Her body was finally discovered by a trekker in May 2013 at the foot of Montaña Gayo, a volcano that forms part of the Famara cliffs.
