Holiday rental (VV) properties have increased by 3% in just 20 days this month, according to figures from, the General Canarian Tourist Register obtained by Lancelot.
The figures show that 252 properties were classed as VV rental properties between the 3rd and the 23rd of April.
There is currently a total of 7,986 VV properties on the island, over 75% of which are located in the three main tourist areas of Tías, Teguise and Yaiza.
The recent rise in registrations could be evidence of a “bubble” in registrations, prompted by the threat of the Canarian Government’s controversial new law on Holiday Rentals which will close its public consultation phase on 9th May and then be rushed through parliament using urgent measures provisions.
It plans to make the registration of VV properties far more difficult, capping the percentage of VVs in certain areas, introducing strict new application and inspection criteria and demanding specific regulations from each of the 88 councils on the Canaries.
While the Canarian Government claims that the new law is addressing the housing crisis, critics also believe that the influential hotel lobby – long opposed to expansion of the VV sector – have been instrumental in its formation.
ASCVAV, the Canarian Association of Holiday Rental Owners, has strongly attacked the law, saying it will “exterminate” VV on the islands.
