Yesterday Spain’s Meteorological Agency (AEMET) raised an orange alert for wind speeds, with gusts of 85 km/h in certain parts of the island. The wind and strong waves caused damage to a section of Playa Honda’s seafront and to Manrique’s sculpture at the Casa-Museo del Campesino in San Bartolomé.

The strong winds and waves experienced yesterday was something “I have never seen”, a resident of Playa Honda told La Voz.

On Playa Honda’s seafront the strong waves battled against the walls along the edge of the footpath before eventually breaking a section of it.

Additionally, emergency services were called Manrique’s sculpture to the farm worker at the Casa-Museo del Campesino in San Bartolomé after a report that the top of the sculpture had loosened while battling the strong winds.

The wind also caused the road connecting Tahíche and San Bartolomé to close, as well as the road to Famara, after a large amount of sand had blown onto it.

Gazette reader, Andy Leatham, sent in this photograph of the sculpture bending in the wind.
