Playa del Jablillo in Costa Teguise was closed yesterday afternoon after jellyfish were discovered on the rocks and in the water.

The jellyfish appear to be examples of the Portuguese Man o´ War*, an organism which can cause extremely painful stings.

A yellow flag was also raised at Playa del Reducto in Arrecife after a few jellyfish were discovered there.

Jellyfish are rare on Lanzarote, especially the southern-facing resort beaches, but once in a while currents can bring large amounts of the creatures.

*These creatures are not technically jellyfish, but hardly anyone knows what a siphonophore is.
