The Castillo de Santa Bárbara, the historical fort that overlooks the old town of Teguise, will reopen as a mirador (viewing point) in the next few days.
Despite opening for a few weeks earlier this year, the castle was closed due to lack of conveniences and staff shortages. Teguise Ayuntamiento has now finalised a contract with staff who will attend the castle.
There are no plans to reopen the Pirate Museum that was present in the castle until a few years ago. However, entry to the castle will be free of charge.
The castle was built on the rim of the crater of the Guanapay volcáno in 1551, and used as an important lookout point, as well as a refuge for locals from pirate raids that often took place on the island.
