One in five houses on the Canary Islands were unoccupied in 2021, according to a survey by the surveying group Tinsa.

The total of unoccupied houses on all islands is 211,311, an increase of 53% on the figure 20 years ago in 2001.

The amount of unoccupied properties in Lanzarote has increased by 67% in the same period.

The general trend in Spain is also an increase of 24% in unoccupied houses, although this is not reflected in most major cities, where there has been a decrease in empty properties.

Government proposals to relieve the housing crisis by penalising owners of properties that are left empty or incentivizing rentals have not yet been put into practice.
