On the 10th September the Rojillos (the reds) won their opening match of the new season in the tercera division (fifth tier) 2-1 against Gran Canarian side UD Teror. The prospect of an exciting campaign lies ahead under the new leadership of ex-River Plate and Osasuna star Leonel “Pipa” Gancedo. Ian Lane writes about the season ahead.
The 52-year-old manager has played football at the highest level and is determined along with his team to make sure that UD Lanzarote are challenging for promotion come mid-May.
Pipa and his team have managed to secure the signings of several young Argentine players who were in the youth sides and B teams of River Plate, Boca Juniors and San Lorenzo that all play at the highest level in Argentina.
With the experienced captains Ayoze Pérez, Raúl and goalkeepers Alejandro and Ruyman, along with an abundance of local talent, Rojillo supporters have good reason to be optimistic about ending their 14-year reign in the Tercera, and maybe dream of a return to Spain’s shop window of football in Segunda B.
The Rojillo supporters have just seen that one game to date, where throughout the match Lanzarote were dominant and were 2-0 to the good. However, a hatful of chances were missed to kill the game before later on the newly promoted side won a penalty and made it 2-1, which led to a nervy ending.
