The charity in charge of the hostels in La Santa and Yaiza that are being used to accommodate young unaccompanied migrants is being investigated for accusations of corruption and embezzlement.
After an investigation by the Canarias 7 newspaper, prosecutors are looking at claims the Respuesta Social Siglo XXI Charity diverted funds intended for the care of young migrants to four of its executives.
An anticorruption prosecutor has said there are indications that significant amounts of money have been diverted for “private purposes.” Canarias 7 has claimed that these expenses included meals at restaurants and beauty treatments.
The centres, three in Gran Canaria and two in Lanzarote, receive a sum of €95 each day for each young migrant.
