Four wines from Lanzarote have returned to the island with two gold and two silver medals at “The World of Malvasia” event in Parenzo, Croatia.
The World of Malvasia is an international Malvasia competition that has been held since 2009 and is organized by Vinistra – the association of winegrowers and winemakers of Istria.
The annual event sees wines made from the Malvasia grape come together to be judged by a panel of wine experts – with the best of the best receiving awards.
WINNING WINES
Bodegas El Grifo took home three awards, a Gold and two Silvers. Bodegas La Geria received a Gold award for its Manto Malvasía Volcánica, which achieved a 93/100 score.
MALVASÍA VOLCÁNICA – A LANZAROTE SPECIALITY
The grape, which has been cultivated on Lanzarote for centuries, provides the majority of the crisp, fragrant young white wines for which the island is famed.
The aromatic malvasía grape reaches its most unique expression in Lanzarote, where an entirely new cultivation method was invented to coax sweetness and flavour from the volcanic ashes that covered the island 240 years ago.
The average age of a malvasía vine on Lanzarote is 30 years, but many are well over a hundred years old.
