Many areas of Lanzarote were hit by heavy rain yesterday afternoon, with Arrecife, as usually, suffering serious floods.
As is tiresomely usual during heavy rain, roads were made temporarily impassable by flooding, and sewage drains overflowed, leaving dead rats and the smell of sewage in many areas of the capital.
Reports of heavy rain had been dismissed by some after a shower the night before and a fairly sunny morning, but the heavens opened in early afternoon, dumping 42 litres of water per square metre.
A number of houses were also flooded, along with underground garages, and residents once again complained about how Arrecife appears to be unprepared for heavy rainfall.
As a result of the downpour, the opening of Arrecife’s nativity scene was cancelled.
