Flights from Lanzarote to Madrid will be declared a “Public Service Obligation” route, in a pilot scheme which will see fares to and from Spain’s capital kept under a maximum price limit.
The scheme will be monitored before being applied to other Canarian airports.
Last year, more than half a million passengers flew between Madrid and Lanzarote, and 375,000 of which were non-residents. The rest, who were Canarian residents, qualify for the 75% discount on fares.
Routes classed as Public Service Obligations are an EU initiative designed to ensure that routes deemed as important for connectivity are kept available and affordable.
