Two breakdowns at the island’s desalination plants have left several villages without water since Wednesday.

A scheduled maintenance stop at the main desalination plant at Las Caletas ended up “getting complicated” according to Lanzarote’s Water Consortium. As a result, Güime, Tao, Muñique, Soo, Tiagua, Teguise, Nazaret, and Tahíche were all left without water supplies. Later on, supply was also halted to Arrieta, Punta Mujeres, Guatiza, Mala, Haría, and Máguez

A separate electrical failure at the Janubio plant led to the shutdown of the pumping station at Las Breñas, leaving Yaiza, Uga, and Mácher without supply.

Supply has gradually been restored to many of the affected areas, and Aguas de Lanzarote predicts that normal service will be resumed by Friday.
