The beach at Caleta de Famara was closed yesterday after health inspectors detected “microbiological contamination” in the waters. The closure affects the small-town beach, and not the much larger Famara beach, where a red flag warning against bathing is permanently on display.
The exact nature of the contamination has not been confirmed, but the same beach was briefly closed last year when traces of E.coli, a type of bacteria that is usually related to sewage, were detected.
Organisers of the Famara Total trail race, which will take place in the Famara zone over the weekend, have stated that the event will not be affected by the news.
It’s the latest beach closure in a summer that has also seen bathing prohibited at Arrecife’s Playa Reducto and the Playa de la Cura in Playa Honda, and which has highlighted the problems caused by an increased population and ageing sanitation network.
