Rubbish Bin Fires in Lanzarote Fall by More Than 40% During First Half of 2026

Rubbish bin fires across Lanzarote fell by 40.5% during the first six months of 2026.

Between January and June, firefighters responded to 792 incidents across the island, an increase of 33 callouts compared with the 759 recorded during the same period in 2025, representing a 4.3% rise overall.

One of the report’s most notable findings is the continued decline in vandalism-related rubbish bin fires. Fire crews dealt with just 22 container fires during the first half of 2026, down from 37 in the same period last year and 51 in 2024. While rubbish bin fires decreased significantly, the number of vehicle fires rose slightly.

Technical assistance was the busiest category of emergency response, accounting for 195 interventions, or around one-quarter of all callouts. Firefighting operations followed closely behind with 178 incidents, representing approximately 22% of the total workload.

Emergency crews also carried out 79 rescue operations. These included 29 animal rescues and 25 rescues involving hikers, most of which took place in the municipalities of Yaiza and Tinajo. The report also recorded 74 preventive patrols, 52 traffic accident responses, and 41 home entry operations.

In water-related emergencies, official figures confirmed two drowning fatalities on the island during the first half of the year.

Arrecife generated the highest number of emergency responses, with 327 interventions (around 41% of all incidents recorded across Lanzarote.) Yaiza followed with 111 callouts, ahead of Teguise (104), Tías (82), San Bartolomé (70), Haría and Tinajo (36 each), while emergency services responded to 26 incidents on La Graciosa.
