Arrecife Ayuntamiento has launched an investigation after a section of wall at the recently restored Plaza de Las Palmas was damaged, just months after the historic square reopened following a major renovation.

Mayor Yonathan de León has instructed the Arrecife Local Police to investigate the incident and determine exactly how the damage occurred. The affected area is located on the corner of the plaza near calle Otilia Díaz, beside the church.

According to the council, initial indications suggest the wall was struck during a manoeuvre by the driver of a van in the area.

The investigation will establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and, if appropriate, allow the council to pursue a claim against the driver’s insurance company to recover the cost of repairs.

Plaza de Las Palmas reopened last autumn after an extensive restoration project, bringing an end to years of deterioration. The square holds significant cultural value, having been designated a Site of Cultural Interest (BIC). It is recognised as one of the artistic works by Lanzarote-born artist César Manrique and forms part of the protected surroundings of the historic Church of San Ginés, itself a listed monument.

The council says it will await the findings of the Local Police report before deciding on any further action regarding the damage to one of Arrecife’s most emblematic public spaces.
