The Lanzarote Cabildo took part last Thursday in the “PLEITERÍA” event held at the San Bartolomé Municipal Theatre, paying tribute to the craftsmanship and cultural legacy of Manuela Martín Viera.

The ceremony brought together local officials, relatives, friends, and members of Lanzarote’s cultural and artisan community in an emotional evening recognising a lifetime devoted to preserving the island’s traditional crafts and folk heritage.

Lanzarote’s Councillor for Crafts, Aroa Revelo, described the tribute as “a well-deserved recognition of a woman who has dedicated her life to protecting and passing on a fundamental part of our cultural identity.”

She added that traditional crafts “represent the memory of our towns and the efforts of many women who, through their daily work, have helped preserve traditions that are now part of Lanzarote’s heritage.”

During the event, special recognition was given to Martín Viera’s work in preserving traditional techniques including empleita, roseta, embroidery, and openwork embroidery. Organisers highlighted her role in keeping these crafts alive through decades of teaching and artisanal work.

The “PLEITERÍA” gathering also served as a wider tribute to generations of women artisans whose work has helped safeguard Lanzarote’s cultural roots.

The evening concluded with a musical performance by Alexis Lemes, bringing the celebration of Lanzarote’s ethnographic and cultural heritage to a close.
