Ángel Vázquez, head of Lanzarote’s tourist centres, has stated that there are no plans to operate shuttles buses to the Montañas del Fuego centre at Timanfaya.

Vázquez said that recent statements by Mariano Zapata of the Canarian Government, which appeared to support the establishment of a park-and-ride scheme, were “an error of interpretation”, and said he believed that Zapata was referring to a recently-announced plan to provide shuttles to the Parque Natural de los Volcanes, not the Montañas del Fuego.

The Parque Natural is an area surrounding the Timanfaya National Park, and shuttle buses will shortly be used to take hikers to vulnerable areas such as the Volcán del Cuervo and Caldera Blanca. However, Lanzarote’s Cabildo has opposed a plan to operate a park-and-ride scheme from Mancha Blanca to the Montañas del Fuego.

Vásquez claimed that installing such a scheme at the island’s most popular tourist centre could cause losses of between five to eight million euros annually. He also claimed that cars “do not cause pollution because they are turned off” and said that a survey revealed that 85% of visitors preferred a private car to a bus.

Concerning the regular queues of cars at the entrance to the attraction, Vazquez said that fibre optics were being installed so that visitors could access it in a controlled way with tickets.
