“Almost 70” passengers were left stranded in Lanzarote yesterday morning after a failure of the EES system, according to a report in La Voz de Lanzarote.

According to National Police sources, the technical failure affected airports throughout Europe, but was resolved by lunchtime. Such technical failures were quoted to be “recurrent.”

As a result of the delays, a Ryanair flight from Lanzarote to Edinburgh took off without “dozens” of passengers who had not been able to reach the boarding gate in time.

In March 31st, Ryanair also left behind 89 passengers who were booked on a flight to Bristol, closing the gate and unloading their luggage. Before the EES system was introduced, the airline also left passengers stranded twice in 2024.

The Irish budget operator is the only airline reported to have taken such decisions at Lanzarote Airport. Ryanair recently called on the Spanish government to follow Greece’s example and suspend the EES system over the summer season.
