Tonight at 8pm, the streets of Arrecife will fill with the faithful as the Procession of the Encounter takes place.

This is one of the most important processions of Easter Week in the capital, as images of Christ and the Virgin Mary are taken out of the church and paraded on separate routes around the city centre, accompanied by municipal bands playing solemn music.

The mother and son meet each other face-to-face in the Plazuela, where a silence is observed and a sermon delivered. In previous years a singer has also performed a saeta (an unaccompanied flamenco song) from an upper window, although this is an Andalusian tradition rather than a Canarian one.
