The controversy surrounding the Amavir old people’s home in Tías continues, with further complains about neglect and lack of care at the centre.

The Cabildo has announced that it will supervise the residence in Los Lirios, Tías, more closely after complaints by Lanzarote’s Socialist Party and the Comisiones Obreros union that the residence was short-staffed and lacking in sheets and towels.

These complaints were followed by the release of WhatsApp messages from staff which included photos of residents taken without their permission, in a state of undress and accompanied by mocking messages.

Amavir, the company in charge of the residence, claims to have sacked the workers in question and denies charges of “total neglect”. The company admits staffing problems, which it attributes to lack of funding and the difficulty of finding qualified employees, partly due to the shortage of affordable accommodation on the island.

However, several family members of residents have come forward with complaints about neglect at the centre.
