A 65-year-old woman was rescued by helicopter after a fall on the Caldera Blanca walking route in Tinajo.

Emergency services were alerted at about 1.15 pm and attended the scene of the incident, where the walker was found to have a possible fracture of the ankle.

Given the inaccessibility of the zone, a helicopter was called to airlift the hiker to the airport, from where she was transferred to the hospital.

This is the third such incident to occur on Lanzarote’s largest volcanic caldera this year. The other rescues have also involved older hikers suffering leg injuries

Caldera Blanca is one of the most spectacular walking routes on the island, but also involves several kilometres of hiking over dirt paths, rough volcanic lava and loose scree. Trekking poles can be extremely useful even for younger, fitter hikers.
