1,027 babies were delivered by the maternity team at the Dr José Molina Orosa hospital in Arrecife last year.
Of these babies, 516 were girls and 511 were boys. Eleven of the births were twins, and eleven women over the age of 45 gave birth.
An epidural was administered in 71% of the deliveries and, last year, the hospital has permitted partners to be present during caesareans. Immediate skin-to-skin contact after birth is also being promoted, which involves placing the new-born baby on the bare chest of the mother or father.
The figures show that the steady decline in births on Lanzarote continues. In 2024, the figure was 1,040, and almost every year since 2007, when 1,689 births were registered, has seen a drop in new-borns on the island.
