Lanzarote’s Water Consortium yesterday approved a 15% increase in water prices “to align revenue with the cost of production.”
The increase was approved by a majority of members of the Consortium, which consists of the mayors of the island’s seven municipalities, the Cabildo President and the President of the Water Consortium. If finally approved, it will be the first increase in water tariffs since 2013.
An increase in tariffs is one of the conditions of the proposed deal by which management of the island’s water supply will be passed from Canal Gestión to the companies Sacyr and Aqualia.
The Socialist mayors of Tías, Yaiza, San Bartolomé, who support returning water supply to public ownership, voted against the price increase, as did the mayor of Yaiza.
However, a likely date for the increase has not been announced because the price increases must be submitted to the Canarian Pricing Commission for approval. The commission has previously rejected a price increase on the grounds that so much water is lost on the island.
The proposed increases are as follows:
Domestic tariffs:
0-10 m³: From 0.60 to 0.69 euros (per cubic metre)
11 – 30 m³: From 1.03 to 1.19 euros.
31 – 40 m³: From 1.75 to 2.01 euros
Over 40 m³: From 3.69 – 4.25 euros.
Industrial and tourist tariff
From 2.91 to 3.35 euros
